Marios’  Straight Win in Emerton Fil-Aus Basketball Championship

Emerton, NSW  -   Marios teams reclaimed its status as the top teams in Sydney West by thrashing their respective foes, and captured the 2007 Emerton Fil-Aus Basketball Championship Second Conference last December 16, 2007 at the Emerton Leisure Centre.

Marios Team A upset defending champion Amigos Mechanics in Game 3 in the best-of-three series, 46-44, to capture the crown in Over 30 Division.    Jason Manaid topscored for the champions by chipping in 12 points followed by the Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP) Vincent Gacis with 11 points.   "I'm really proud of my players," said coach Mario “Lakay” Manalo. "We played as a team all season and simply did the same today. We executed well, played solid defense, rebounded well, created turnovers. That's our game."  Emer Arago led the undermanned Mechanics with 22 points with Gerry Mantua caning in 11 points.

In the other championship game, Marios Team B defeated defending champion and favourite  Kingston team, 48-42 also in game 3 of best-of-three series to snatched the Over 40 Division title.  With both teams employing mix tight man-to-man and zone defence early on, the score at half time was 21-20.  However in the middle of the second half,  Finals MVP Alex Naguit  scored eight unanswered points in a short span of time including penalty shots for two controversial technical fouls called against Kingston team.  From then on, Marios team B controlled the game’s tempo until the final buzzer.

The tournament was sponsored by Daisy Cumming of Eagle Gateway Marketing, Amigos Mechanics and SGV Consulting.  iRemit Blacktown and PCC-NSW also provided support during the Awards Night. PCC-NSW was represented by Ms Elsa Collado with her La Union Dance Group and Mr Ronaldo Villaver, the council’s Secretary and PRO, respectively.

The next competition starts January 20, 2008.  Kindly email bidwillbasketball@yahoo.com.au for further details.
